Attic Cleanout Safety and Access Checklist

The first question is whether the attic has a safe walking surface and access. A finished walk-up attic is a different job from an unfinished space reached by a small ceiling hatch.

Describe the access

Say whether you have permanent stairs, pull-down stairs or a ceiling hatch. Measure the opening and mention low rooflines or narrow landings.

Stop at suspect material

Do not disturb unknown insulation, damaged material, droppings, mold or exposed wiring. Those conditions may need assessment before a cleanout crew enters.

Bring down only what is safe

Small, closed boxes and light bins are easier to control. Large furniture that cannot fit the opening needs a different plan, not force.

Plan for temperature

Attics can become dangerously hot. Cooler appointment windows and good lighting make inspection and removal safer.
