Storage Unit Cleanout Checklist Before You Close the Account

Ask the facility what “empty” means before the cleanout. Some require the unit swept, the lock removed and the office notified before billing stops.

Storage Unit Cleanout planning scene

Confirm access first

Write down the gate code, building door code, floor, unit number, office hours and loading-zone rules. If an elevator is involved, ask whether it can be reserved.

Keep account items with you

Do not load the unit key, lock, rental agreement or identification. You may need them to close the account after the last item is removed.

Separate records and keepsakes

Open boxes with uncertain contents before the crew arrives. Documents, photos, jewelry and small electronics are easy to overlook in a fast cleanout.

Final walk-through

Check shelves, rafters and the back corners. Photograph the empty unit, sweep if the agreement requires it, remove your lock and complete the facility’s checkout process.
